Flash Mobs and Teaching

I'm a sucker for flash mobs, despite the fact that I am generally opposed to both flashing and joining the mob. I'm a sucker for a flashmob video, but not for the mob itself so much as the expression on the face of the public. Flash mobs confirm this part of me that wants to believe that the magical can happen in the midst of the ordinary.

It has me thinking that as much as I talk about the meaning of education, a part of me loves teaching for the same reason that I love flash mobs. I love the random moments where something magical happens in the midst of the ordinary.

  1. So true! There are unquantifiable moments in teaching the same way that flashmobs have an essence of spontaneous joy! I just watched this video sitting in a coffeeshop while writing a paper on the reliability and validity of assessments. The video makes it a little bit better!

  2. One of the things I often notice about flash mobs, once I get past just enjoying it, is how everyone gets out of the way. There is always plenty of room for the performers, no matter how crowded the location. Folks make room for that magic to happen.

    1. Making room, creating space - you've got a point there.

  3. I think it is the intent of the flashmob that always gives me joy. The hours of preparation and practice, for what...to give that public audience that sense of amazement, joy, bewilderment! Magic :)

    1. I agree. There's something about the intentionality of it that always blows my mind.
